WiDEN

Wideband iDEN

An upgrade for iDEN networks that increases data rates up to four times faster than previous iDEN data rates.

In terms of data technology, WiDEN is roughly comparable to GPRS or EDGE for GSM, or 1xRTT for CDMA.

Because it is based on existing iDEN technology, WiDEN is a relatively smooth upgrade for iDEN network operators such as Nextel.

Like GPRS, EDGE, and 1xRTT, WiDEN mode can only be used when both the mobile device (phone) and local wireless network specifically support it. If either does not support WiDEN, traditional iDEN modes are automatically used instead.
